Springbok Rugby History - 1949-1989
How it all started
Some years ago I spoke to people about Springbok rugby of old and we then realised that there is very little on the market regarding a product that covers the history of Springbok rugby as a collective. My thoughts went back many years to my school days when every schoolboy collected magazines to make scrapbooks of their heroes. So the idea came to me to think about compiling a program on PC that would be like a "electronic" book, but with a difference. This e-book will apart from scanned pictures, also incorporate audio-and video clips. In other words, a full multi-media DVD that people can view on a PC or a television screen, and that can be read and paged like a book.

I have decided on a 40 year period for the e-book, namely from 1949 to 1989. The reason for that is that there is less material (pictures, etc.) available before World War II. The first time that the Springboks played again after WW II was when Fred Allen's mighty All Blacks came to South Africa in 1949.
Then as everybody know, because of South Africa's apartheid policy, there was a boycott by the International Rugby Board countries against South Africa, as well as in other sports, so during the eighties, the Springboks played very little International rugby. |
What a pity, because during the eighties, the Springboks were blessed with some of the best players that South Africa ever produced, but unfortunately and sadly, the rest of the world hardly saw them in action because of apartheid.
Players like the legendary Naas Botha, Danie Gerber, Ray Mordt, Theuns Stoffberg and Rob Louw to name just a few. |
